Marlins OF Giancarlo Stanton reportedly heading to DL

Marlins slugger Giancarlo Stanton will miss the rest of the season because of a groin injury he suffered in Saturday’s 8-7 loss against the White Sox while trying to stretch a single into a double with two outs in the ninth inning.Stanton was presumed to be headed to the disabled list Sunday morning pending the results of an MRI. But Marlins manager Don Mattingly, after seeing the results, termed the injury as “serious” and revealed Stanton is not expected to play again in 2016. He is batting .244/.329/.496 with 25 home runs and 70 RBIs this season. This is the third consecutive season Stanton has had to end prematurely because of injury, and it’s a major blow to the Marlins, who are chasing their first postseason berth since 2003.Earlier this week, reports claimed Miami was interested in signing released designated hitter Alex Rodriguez, who has a home in Miami. Rodriguez is just four home runs shy of 700 for his career, so he could want to latch on with a team to end the season. On top of the groin injury, Stanton has dealt with a hip injury this season. It is unclear whether the two are related.
