Marlins OF Giancarlo Stanton reportedly heading to DL

Baseball 夜网论坛 Marlins slugger Giancarlo Stanton will miss the rest of the season because of a groin injury he suffered in Saturday’s 8-7 loss against the White Sox while trying to stretch a single into a double with two outs in the ninth inning.Stanton was presumed to be headed to the disabled list Sunday morning pending the results of an MRI. But Marlins manager Don Mattingly, after seeing the results, termed the injury as “serious” and revealed Stanton is not expected to play again in 2016. MORE: Nine players who could help contenders after DL stintsStanton, 26, had three hits and three RBIs, including a solo home run Saturday before the injury. He is batting .244/.329/.496 with 25 home runs and 70 RBIs this season. This is the third consecutive season Stanton has had to end prematurely because of injury, and it’s a major blow to the Marlins, who are chasing their first postseason berth since 2003.Earlier this week, reports claimed Miami was interested in signing released designated hitter Alex Rodriguez, who has a home in Miami. Rodriguez is just four home runs shy of 700 for his career, so he could want to latch on with a team to end the season. On top of the groin injury, Stanton has dealt with a hip injury this season. It is unclear whether the two are related.[……]

Rangers cut ties with Josh Hamilton

null null Baseball null The Josh Hamilton experience in Texas is over. Again. But maybe not for good. The Rangers announced Tuesday they have placed the 35-year-old slugger on unconditional release waivers. Releasing him before Sept. 1 leaves open the possbility that Texas could re-sign Hamilton to a minor league contract and have him in the majors before May 15, which would not have been allowed if they waited until next month to release him. MORE: 15 worst free-agent signings of all timeHamilton underwent surgery on his left knee June 8, ending a season that never got started. But the former AL MVP will still make $28.4 million this season, with the Angels picking up all but $2 million of that tab as a condition of the trad夜网论坛e that sent Hamilton back to Texas last spring. He is due another $28.4 million in 2017 ($26.41 million from Angels).  “We plan to monitor Josh’s progress as he continues his rehab process and is medically cleared this winter,” general manager Jon Daniels said. “Given the rules in place, releasing him before the end of this month allows us to keep the door open to extending the relationship in the future.”Hamilton and the Ra[……]

No, Jose Reyes didn't hit the cover off a ball (UPDATE: Yes, he did)

Call me a skeptic, call me a buzzkill, call me a de-romanticizer of baseball. But, no, Jose Reyes did not hit the cover off the ball Friday night. (UPDATE: He kinda did.)Despite what you may have heard or read to the contrary on the ol’ interwebs, Reyes’ feat barely qualifies as, well, a feat. Maybe a feat of his feet, or foot. More on that in a minute. (UPDATE: Nah.) MORE: Best hitter names of the past 100 yearsLet’s examine what happened. — Reyes takes a hack at an 0-2 pitch from Nationals righty A.J. Cole. (UPDATE: Still true.)— He fouls the ball off either his foot or the ground close to his foot. (UPDATE: Still true.)— The ball spins in place, Hokey-Pokey-style, then comes to a stop to reveal that a small portion of its hide has ripped. (UPDATE: Still true.)Watch it all unfold here and we’ll discuss further.Yes, technically Reyes is responsible for the cover coming off the ball. But it almost certainly didn’t happen when it made contact with his bat. (UPDATE: It did.) Roy Hobbs he’s not. (UPDATE: Still true.)A more likely scenario is that the ball made contact with Reyes’ spikes when he fouled it off. (UPDATE: Good theory, but false.) Or perhaps it made contact with the ground in just the right place to cause the horsehide to rip. (UPDATE: See previous update). Also possible: The hide already had a small, unnoticed tear, and the foul-off enabled it to become worse. (UPDATE: Still possible.)This is all to say that the whole thing was really just a quirk. trade rumors: Padres working to trade Matt Kemp

null Baseball null THE RUMOR: Just days after shipping Melvin Upton to the Toronto Blue Jays, the San Diego Padres are are looking to move another outfielder — Matt Kemp. San Diego has reportedly discussed the former All-Star with two teams, including the lowly Atlanta Braves. REPORTED BY: Jim Bowden, ESPN MORE: These NL teams wish they could redo these tradesDETAILS: It seems like Kemp has been in the league forever, but at just 31 years old he should have a handful of 夜网论坛prime years left. And if the Padres are willing to pay most of his $21.75 million salary in addition to the $3.5 being paid by the Dodgers, as Bowden reported, his power bat could be valuable in the middle of the order with Freddie Freeman.THIS SEASON: Kemp’s power numbers are impressive this season with 23 home runs and 69 RBIs, but his .285 on-base percentage is the lowest of his 11-year career.OUR TAKE: The Padres are unloading players and the Braves badly need more power. Aside from Freeman’s 18 long balls, Adonis Garcia is second on the team with just eight. With the team moving into a new stadium next year they need more excitement (and runs) in the lineup. It all depends on what the Braves need to give up to bring in Kemp. At 36-67, the Braves are 25 games back in the NL[……]

Gary Sheffield, Cal Ripken Jr. praise Adam Jones for speaking out on race issues

NEW YORK – Orioles outfielder Adam Jones made waves last week when he discussed the absence from Major League Baseball of protests like Colin Kaepernick taking a knee for the national anthem. In his interview with USA Today, Jones made several salient points, but there was one line that stood out above all the rest.“Baseball is a white man’s sport,” he said. MORE: Convergence of politics and sportsTo nine-time All-Star and 1992 Sporting News Player of the Year Gary Sheffield, now an analyst for TBS, this was not a revelation. At a media luncheon on Tuesday, Sheffield explained why Jones’ comments did not surprise him at all. “I don’t know why that’s news,” Sheffield said. “That’s been going on forever. We’ve been saying this for a long time. So, I don’t look at it as anything different than what somebody else said. What he’s referring to is, Major League Baseball is a sport where, when you look at what I said 15 years ago, 10 years ago, it’s happening now. All he’s doing is repeating it. I said it would be夜网论坛 0% (black players in ), but it’s 6%. When I came in the league, it was 40%. So, basically, he’s just repeating what people said.”Sheffield was most vocal about the issue of African-Americans in baseball in 2007, when he was with the Tigers and caused some controversy in an interview with GQ when he said, “What I called is that you’re going to see more black faces, but there ain’t no English coming out. … (It’s about) being able to tell (Latin players) what to do[……]

Here's what Major League Baseball can learn from soccer

If you’re an American fan of European soccer, you have spent at least some time pondering what it would be like if sports on this side of the Atlantic featured a promotion/relegation system. It’s an interesting thought exercise, full of pros and cons, and highly unlikely to ever be seen here because of the high level of financial security that all teams enjoy in the current system. The aspect of Europe that would make a lot mor夜网论坛e sense for America to borrow is on full display this week, with the final hours before soccer’s transfer window shuts on Wednesday. For the uninitiated, while baseball teams scramble to make last-minute, waiver-cleared trades before the end of the day on Wednesday to finalize their playoff rosters, soccer teams whose seasons have just begun are finalizing their rosters in general until another window opens in January to gear up for the stretch run.MORE: The worst in-season trades for every American League team Trades do happen occasionally in soccer, and can happen across oceans – the most recent swap of particular note was American striker Jozy Altidore going from Sunderland in England to Toronto FC in MLS for Jermain Defoe. Far more common, though, is movement for straight-up cash, and lots of it. Paul Pogba went from Juventus to Manchester United this summer for a fee of $117 million, the highest transfer fee ever, and a figure that does not include a cent of the player’s salary.Under the transfer system, teams must agree to compensation[……]

playoffs 2016: Dodgers-Cubs NLCS TV schedule

null Baseball null null The Cubs are four wins away from playing in their first World Series since 1945 and are eight away from winning it all for the first time since 1908. The preseason favorites took three of four from the Giants in the NL Division Series thanks to a dominant rotation and late-inning heroics by the offense. Chicago advanced to play the Los Angeles Dodgers in the best-of-seven NL Championship Series. The Dodgers are also looking to end a World Series drought. The NL West champions haven’t been to the Fall Classic since Kirk Gibson and Orel Hershiser led the underdog club to a ring in 1988. This time around the Dodgers are long shots again, not only because they are facing the Cubs but also because of the use of key pitchers Clayton Kershaw and Kenley Jansen, each of whom pitched past their comfort zone in the Game 5 NLDS clincher over the Nationals. Their availability and effectiveness will be a question mark early in the series beginning Saturday in Chicago.  MORE: Top 50 players in the playoffsHere’s what you need to know about the NLCS.  TV scheduleGame 1: Dodgers at Cubs, Saturday, 8 p.m. ET on Fox Sports 1 — Kenta Maeda ([……]
